Like with anything else, you will need to practice to get everything perfect, and you might fail a few times, but it is worth it.
However, we don’t like to see people using an at home body wrap that doesn’t work (because it can be a little messy and a little gross) so we came up with some great instructions to help you understand and implement your own wraps.
First let’s understand how it works.
A wrap isn’t something that you relax in while sipping cucumber water and sitting by the pool.
A wrap is made with one sole purpose: to get you sweaty.
We aren’t talking about walking through the park and getting swampy all over – no, we are targeting the sweating to a certain area. Through this process, you are aiding in weight loss, toxin reduction, and you will see a loss of inches.
The results will be similar to when you are in a steam room or sauna. However, many have found that the results are actually better and more substantial in size and weight over a shorter period of time.
The concept is pretty easy to understand:
Depending on the type of wrap that you pick, and whether or not you opt for an at home body wrap or one that is done in a spot, they usually consist of some type of skin exfoliation to get your skin prepared, followed by application of a specific mixture you will choose, followed by wrapping the body with plastic or some other type of material to promote sweating, blood ciculation, and skin regeneration.

While we were trying out different types of wraps, we did find out that there were a few things that made quite a difference. Of course it mattered if our husbands or boyfriends or wives or girlfriends (yep unisex lol) were there, as that always made things more stressful or fun, but that isn’t really whatmatters after all.
Here are the 7 things that really do matter:
  1. Ingredients: It is absolutely crucial that you use high quality organic ingredients in the wrap and you combine them properly. This is the key to success and the secret to the wrap being effective. There are some pretty generic formulas on the internet, but generic is never all that good. Have you tried generic peanut butter? Nothing beats the original. Yummy
  2. Don’t be lazy: There is a tendency to enjoy pre-made wraps that will be quick and easy. Truthfully, pre-made body wrap kits are popular with people who don’t really know what they are doing. The ingredients are synthetic, the results are minimal at best, and you can sometimes get some pretty harsh side effects. There are some that are great, but you will need to do a lot of shopping around. Later in this article we will tell you what to look for.
  3. Exfoliate: Do you ever get embarrassed when you go get a pedicure and see all of the dry skin that comes off of your feet? Newsflash: that dry skin is everywhere. Exfoliating your skin prior to the wrap will help it be more effective, because the wrap formula will be able to penetrate to the deepest layer of the skin. Have a nice shower, scrub off that dry skin with an exfoliation scrub, and use some steam to make everything feel like a spa experience – even if you are in a small bathroom with the kids screaming. And you will get the most of your wrapping session.
  4. Drink Water: Remember that hydration is also key for your skin’s nourishment. It will flush out any toxins that you might have, and make you feel better in general. But for the wrap, it will help with something else. You are trying to shrink your fat cells, and water will help to “flush” some fat from the fat cells out of your system. Remember that is water, not wine or vodka…even if that is what you really want. If you want a little kick, spice it up with some lemon or berries.
  5. Exercise: You need to stay healthy so that the results can last. Eating chips, donuts, and shooting whipped cream into your mouth from the can isn’t going to help you keep the body the wrap helps you attain. Stay healthy, stay moving, and work from the inside out. Eating clean will also help, but the true key is working off more than you take in.
  6. Consistency: Like with anything in life, the harder you work, the better it will be. Even if you are happy with how you look or what result you got because of the wrap, you have to keep moving and working. Don’t stop. Try new things, up the number of times you work on it, like maybe 1-2 wrap per week for a month. Don’t be too greedy though, 1 per week is a good pace, especially for beginners.
  7. Listen : it is very easy to over do it, remember you don’t need to set world wide records, get realistic goals first and build from there. Don’t get over the top, and LISTEN to your body.

Do Body Wraps at home Really Help You Lose Weight?

You should first know that this isn’t a miracle cure: there is no real way to use an at-home body wrap to give yourself a body that looks like Jennifer Aniston’s or a way to have your body fat percentage the same level as Taylor Swift in one day.
It can, however, help with short-term water weight problems when you want to go show everyone at your 10-year reunion that you can still fit into your high school jeans or when you have a big event coming up, like a wedding. Plus, it will also give you a healthy glow – perfect for daring dresses or shirts that bare a lot of skin!
There is no set amount of weight that you can lose, as it all depends on how much water your body retains, how long you keep the wrap on, and the type of wrap. Some people are much more comfortable wearing them for longer periods of time, so they will see better results.
As a note: DO NOT use body wraps if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Women who are taking medications that make them overheat or suffuring from any diseases should consult with a doctor before using body wraps.

How to make your own body wrap vs Going to the Spa

People typically go to a spa for their first body wrap, just to see if all of the work is worth it. One problem with going to the spa, however, is that it can feel really weird to have someone wrapping your body up in plastic and applying moisturizers. Some of us don’t look all that well wrapped up like a piece of sushi.
I guess no one does (except my favorite actor… sorry daydreaming…)
If you aren’t bothered by that kind of contact, then you shouldn’t have a problem.
Spas can also be quite expensive, especially if you plan to make this a regular thing. Some spas will charge $100-200 per session, which doesn’t really work if you aren’t a huge movie star or singer.
That is why there are so many DIY body wrap recipes popping up: they are easier, they are more discreet, and they save some serious coin.

Our 6 simple Steps to do your Homemade Body Wrap

Here is the best way to get the most out of your wrap and we will give you specific recipes for the mixture in the following section.
  • STEP 1 : Exfoliate the skin where you are going to use the wrap. Use a dry brush to remove the dead skin, or better use a body scrub made up of natural ingredients from your home.
Here’s a great recipe:
  • 2 parts coconut oil (we are big fan of coconut oil ,  which is cost effective and great quality, with divine scent, it can be used for food, hair, skin etc… but you can also use olive oil)
  • 4 parts coffee grains or sugar (make sure they are fine as large ones can tear your skin)
  • A few drops of essential oil if you want a different scent (but the coconut oil scent is already divine so it is more than enough for me )
Use a loofah or a bath mitt to rub a generous amount of the body scrub all over your skin, focusing on the part of your body where the wrap will go. Using a circular motion, make sure to spend more time of the roughest areas. Thoroughly cleanse your skin to remove any leftover granules.
I also suggest you not to use your regular scrub if it is not organic, because, you are trying to open your pores and promote sweating, and most regular scubs can contain silicones, or mineral oil, that kinda block the way.
Don’t use a moisturizer after the exfoliation, if you used the coconut oil, as it will leave your skin nourished and you obviously don’t want to put too much between your skin and the wrap.
Another option is to use microdermabrasion machine to get a top notch exfoliation session that will get rid of that old layer. But keep in mind if you use it, some prefer to do one microdermabrasion session and wait the other day to do the wrap so not to overwhelm your body.
  • Step 2 : Wrap it up! Using the recipes below, apply a thin layer of the mixture to your skin where you want the wrap to go. Focus on areas where you need to lose inches, diminish the appearance of cellulite, or firm everything up. (Remember you don’t need to apply a big amount, don’t think the more you apply, the better it is. The mixtures are very effective so don’t need to apply too much. It would be a waste of money and it will just make a big mess.)
Only apply one section at a time and then wrap that section with plastic wrap or/and using elastic bandages (recommended because it helps to squeeze your tissue together for better results and it stays in place a bit better). Then you can move onto the next section.
For example, apply the mix to one leg, then wrap the leg, then apply the mix to the other leg, then wrap.
If you only have a little time, rubbing the mixture all over your body and then just wrapping yourself up can work, but it is difficult, messy, and usually not nearly as effective.
That is why we prefer to do it bit by bit. Anyway, just do what is more convenient for you.
Warning: Do not wrap it too tightly! You want compression and yes compression helps but don’t go too far, you need to feel some compression, not to be so uncomfortable that you can’t breathe and not too tight to cut off circulation.
Of coure, you are not compelled to do a complete body wrap, which we do not recommend if you are a beginner, you could instead do a spot treatment like choosing any area to focus on.
You could also for instance wrap lower body one day and upper body the next. The most popular wraps are stomach wraps. They are much easier to do do for sure/
Tip: To wrap the neck and chin, use a shower cap to cover your hair. Bring the wrap down from the top of your head and bring it under the chin and back around.
Anyway, we recommend that you start slowly by doing spot treatments that will focus on your “problem” areas first. This will help you to make sure that you don’t have any sort of reaction to the recipe.
As a side note: you can either simply use the wrapping plastic alone but in our opinion, it is not tight enough for us, that is why we prefer to use after the plastic film some bandages that we secure with safety pins .The bandages typically come with clips but safety pins work better with faster work and a more secure wrap.
Some also simply don’t use the plastic film and simply soak the bandages in the mixture and apply the bandages on skin. I don’t find this method very convenient because you waste a lot of mixture in this soaking process… besides if the bandages soak up the mixture, you will need to clean the bandages like crazy.
From our personal experience, we prefer using plastic film then bandages. The plastic film really increases the heating process… while the bandages keep the tissues tight for better results.
You can find some plastic film almost everywhere such as this cheap one which can be used for many things. You also have the ace bandages by 3M, but we found them more expensive and more medical oriented.  If you need ankle stabilization, swelling issues, etc, the ace brand is the one to pick.
  • Step 3 : SWEAT IT OUT. Once everything is on, you are going to look comical. Take a few pictures or selfies  to show your friends and then cover yourself with a warm blanket, a heating pad, or a bathrobe. You want to make sure that you are nice and warm so that your body starts to sweat.
  • Step 4 : RELAX. It might feel difficult, but you should start to try to relax. You can relax or meditate in your bathtub (no water of course haha), read a good book, listen to your favorite music, or perform light exercise to promote sweating and increase circulation. (Which would be fun but a bit messy with mixtures dripping) or just sit back and watch a marathon of that TV series you’ve been wanting to. (Meredith, Cristina, Derek, Mark, I am coming ;))
  • Step 5 : Unwrap. After about an hour, give or take a few minutes, you can start to unwrap yourself. Remove the bandages and take a room temperature shower to remove the extra gunk.
  • Step 6 : Moisturize: Apply your favorite moisturizer to your entire body, focusing on the area you had wrapped. I usually apply here a stretch mark cream as my skin can absorb the product easily for optimum results.
There it is – super easy! Notice how the words “husband,” “wives”,“kids,” or “job,” weren’t in there at all?
Check this video from a spa, which may help you better visualize how to do your wrap. Notice here that instead of using some cream, we will use a homemade mixture with clay and /or seaweed powder that is super effective and also used in most spas. In this video, the model ( who frankly doesn’t need any body wraps, she has a perfect body) did not use any bandages… there is nothing to tighten up haha.

How Much Money Can You Save?

Most of us already have all of the ingredients we need in our homes to make the at-home wraps. Of course, if this is something that you plan on doing frequently, you can start to make purchases that will help you get the best results possible. If you are just starting out, you can just go with the basics.
When making these purchases, remember that a trip to the spa for a body wrap can cost $300 – so you won’t be getting away with spending a few dollars. Still, the cost for everything, including the plastic wrap, bandages should cost you somewhere around $25 -30 maybe a little more if you need to buy a heating pad. But that would last you for several sessions, so the cost would be more like $3 per wrap. What do you think of that? Awesome, isn’t it.

How to make your own body wraps at home for your specific needs

Using specific ingredients that are quality and you can trust is the only way to really meet your goals.
We will recommend some ingredients and certain essential oils or herbs that were specifically chosen to help with problems. One ingredient might help with losing inches, while another will help with cellulite – so make sure you are paying attention!
Simply put, different goals require different ingredients.
Then again, most of us will probably have a few goals in mind: inch loss, cellulite, skin tightening, or body detoxing. That’s fine – you will simply want to incorporate more ingredients in to your DIY body wrap recipe!

What Are The Best Weight Loss Recipe Ingredients?

If you want to lose weight or inches, a clay base is the best to pull impurities, dirt, and other nasty things that clog up your pores and stretch out your skin. Clay, which acts like a magnet, will also help with acne.
The best ingredients to include in a wrap for weight loss are:
  • Bentonite Clay (your base)  , 100% natural white clay that can also be used for face masks, blackheads, excellent quality, harvested in USA and way cheaper than other brands, white clay is also perfect for sensitive skins)
  • Cayenne Powder (use sparingly until you know how much you can handle to increase the heating process)
  • Green Tea for the diuretic properties

What Are The Best Skin & Cellulite Ingredients ?

Cellulite is the absolute worst. There is nothing worse than it: spiders, broken nails, or even television commercials. When it comes to beating it you need to remember one thing: SEAWEED. Natural kelp is probably the best, as it is packed with minerals like vitamin C, pantothenic acid, copper, zinc, vitamin K, riboflavin, folate, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and iron. All you have to do is make sure that is all natural.
Plus, seaweed also acts like an exfoliant, which we’ve already talked about the importance of. The best recipes for cellulite loss include:
  • Seaweed powder (your base) . There are also other brands but we liked the quality of this one and the price is really fair for the quantity of 16 oz.)
  • Aloe Vera to help soothe and hydrate your skin deep down
  • Caffeine (generally in the form of coffee)
Combine these together to get quite a punchy little mixture that will help keep those dimples at bay. Experiment with different mixtures for different parts of your body. That cellulite on the back of your thighs will be a particularly vicious enemy, but you can defeat it!

Other Ingredients to add

You can use a lot of different things in your body wraps, so much so that the list is endless. However, there are a few things that most people would recommend:
Essential Oils with diuretic properties (to improve water retention issue)
  • Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)
  • Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
  • Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
  • Grapefruit (Citrus paradise)
  • Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis)
  • Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Herbs to relax, detox :
Other Ingredients to gently exfoliate skin:
  • Goat’s Milk Powder
  • Whole Milk Powder
  • Apple Cider Vinegar (Organic) with detoxification properties –

Put It All Together

The most important part to the success of your wrapping mixture is to choose the best possible combination of ingredients that will help you reach your goals. Experiment like you used to with store bought hair dye or food coloring. Once you get good enough, you can be like Rachel Ray and not use any instructions.
The first few times you are playing chemist, make sure you write everything down so you can replicate the recipe if you really liked it. Once you find a recipe that really works, you can even pass it onto friends as a secret recipe haha. But keep in mind we are all different, and respond differently to the same recipe. A little tweaking might be then necessary. Be creative

Our Best Recipes for DIY body wrap mixtures

The list of “best recipes” for at home body wraps DIY is limitless. Of course, as you know from some of the other things you tried from on the Internet, you can find almost everything and a lot of nonsense.
If you are anything like me, you tend to pick the things that don’t really work.
Luckily for you, we did the research! And we experimented them for you
Remember real body wraps usually include either seaweed or clay… This is what salon spas will usually propose you (for a good reason) because they are the most effective ingredients.
Seaweed and clay are very powerful and effective multipurpose elements to have in your beauty routine. I love them and I am not the only one

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Seaweed Powder
  • 3 tbsp. (45ml) of Almond Oil or Olive Oil ( use your favorite oil here  )
  • 2 cups of warm water (you can also substitute 2 cups of coffee)
  • Optional: 2 drops of anti-cellulite oils (Rosemary, juniper, or fennel)

Directions:

  1. Mix everything together until you reach your desired consistency. You want it to look like a mud, not water.
  2. Add the essential oils if you desire
  3. Follow the 6 steps listed above.
Standing in the shower or over a towel will help avoid making a mess.
Apply mixture to your entire body, from the waist down. Once applied, you can wrap areas of your skin with plastic wrap then bandages. Some like to use only bandages soaked in warm water to wrap the area, to keep it hydrated longer, it is also a good method. We prefer to use plastic because we think it tends to increase heat. Anyway, both methods work fine; it is only a matter of taste…
This recipe is for cellulite, which typically forms on our legs, butts, and hips. Having someone help you is best, especially for those hard to reach areas. Make sure that you cover every inch of your skin that you want – especially because anything you miss will only show more.
Once you are wrapped, put a blanket over you and let yourself rest (and sweat!) for about an hour. Take a warm shower (but not too hot) when you are done to rinse off any leftover seaweed mixture.

Tight skin, skinny jeans wrap for weight loss

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup bentonite powder(clay)
  • 2 cups of green tea (you can substitute water)
  • Optional: 2 drops of diuretic essential oil of choice (check above)

Directions:

Mix everything together and add more if you want a different consistency. DO NOT use any metal object when mixing, as it will react to the bentonite. It can draw traces of metal, and you obviously want to keep this power as high as possible for your body. Follow the steps listed above for this as well. Make sure that you rinse this one off especially well.

Detox body wrap

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup bentonite powder (clay)
  • 1 cup of apple cider vinegar ( remember to skin test first, and dilute if necessary with water )
  • 1 cup of water
  • Optional: 2 drops of diuretic essential oil of choice

Directions:

Mix everything in a big bowl – and just like the last recipe, make sure that you do not use anything metal or you will reduce the effectiveness of the mixture. Add water or more powder to get your desired thickness. Follow the same instructions above.

Epsom salt sea detox body wrap

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 4 cups of purified warm water (you could also add a chamomille herbal tea bag while warming or another herbal tea)
  • 3 tbsp. of Olive oil (Replace: coconut oil or almond oil)
  • 2 drops of rosemary essential oil
  • An old sheet

Directions:

  1. Mix 4 cups boiled water and the Epsom salt into your sink.
  2. Once the salts are fully dissolved, soak an old sheet into the mixture – make sure it is warm, but not overly hot.
  3. Mix the oils together and massage into your body. Wrap yourself in the old sheet letting your arms and head free.
  4. Wrap plastic around the sheet to keep it close to your body. You don’t want to constrict yourself. You can add some bandages to keep it tight.
  5. Lie down on an old blanket and keep yourself warm.

Ginger Body Wrap

This wrap helps with circulation thanks to the ginger and clay.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of ginger roots or powder to get a great warming effect (decrease the dose if you have sensitive skin)
  • 5 tablespoons (60ml) of bentonite clay powder
  • 10 tbsp. of warm water

Directions:

  1. Place everything into a blender (yeah am a bit lazy, to do it manually) for about a minute so that it mixes together. You can add more clay or water to reach your desired thickness.
  2. Apply to your body where you want to improve circulation and then wrap with plastic wrap.
  3. Only let this wrap on for 20 – 40 minutes and then rinse with warm water first, and then a quick cold rinse.

The Caliente body wrap

The heat can also help alleviate some muscle pains at the same time.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) cayenne power (be careful, if you have sensitive skin like me, stick to 1 tablespoon, and test it on  a small zone on your forearm first to make sure your skin can handle it. You can of course lessen the amount.)
  • 10 tablespoons (150ml) of white clay
  • 20 tablespoons of warm water (300ml)
  • Optional: 2 drops of diuretic essential oil of choice.

Instructions :

  1. Combine the cayenne powder, clay, and a little warm water to make a good paste. Then add any oils you want.
  2. Warm the paste in the microwave if necessary before applying to the painful area.
  3. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes then rinse it off with warm water. ( yeah prefer not to keep the cayenne effect too long aha)
  4. If you want this wrap to be more effective, use plastic wrap to increase the heat and perspiration – but be careful! Skin with a little cellulite is a lot better than burns!

The All-Star Body Wrap

Ingredients :

  • 0.5 cup of seaweed powder
  • 0.5 cup of white clay
  • 2 cups of apple cider vinegar
  • Optional: 3 drops of diuretic essential oil of choice

Directions:

Mix everything in a big bowl, and add more clay or water until you achieve your desired consistency. With apple cider vinegar, remember to skin test first, and dilute if necessary.
Reminder: DO NOT use metal objects. You know why if you read the previous recipes…Follow the same 6 steps that we initially listed.
